What was the early Christian Church like around 100 AD?

Kenneth Whitehead wrote an excellent, detailed article for the Catholic Answers website. In it, he describes the journey of Ignatius of Antioch to his martyrdom in Rome.

This is history and well documented. As the article notes, the Church at this point was closer to the time of Christ than we are now to WWI. Ignatius served as bishop for about 40 years and was probably ordained while some of the Apostles were still alive. For those interested, it was well over a century before Constantine. This was the early Christian Church.
