(Lk 6:43-49)
"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.

A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.

Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' but not do what I command?

I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built.

But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."

@George First half of passage tells the secular story, "We control our circumstances & destiny. We make it happen. We speak it into existence." It's the basis for most motivational speeches. It can even be applied to prosperity gospel. "We will be rich if we speak Bible verses about money, abundance, supply, etc."
There is truth in it but only a half truth.
You know the saying, "Be careful what you wish for you just might get it." The achievement of desires, ego and will power may not bring peace, love or happiness, but it will bring adversity. Life is all about trials & overcoming.
The 2nd half: Jesus makes it clear trials will come. (When flood came, when river burst against it.) If we obey Him we will make it thru. That is why we need to pray & read the Bible. It is the foundation to help us thru all trials. Be doers of the word not just hearers. Oftentimes, it takes a collapsing of part of our life to get us to pay attention to Jesus' teachings. That is what happened to me. I was so foolish at age 25. Oh boy, did God set me straight. Now if only my nephews, nieces, bros & sis would listen to my newly found wisdom. All our years of Catholic school. It's shameful!
