It’s been a year and I still strongly believe this. Perhaps even more strongly than last year.
I was reading St Bernadette’s autobiography today at the recommendation of my priest to read the biographies of saints. I wasn’t sure about how that was supposed to make me feel closer to God but I tried it anyway.
I’m really glad I chose the little flower herself since she’s (relatively) modern and I can relate to her more on a human level.
I have a personal relationship with various service providers, neighbors, friends, and even a few people I don't like much.
I have an intimate relationship with far fewer people that I love dearly.
Faithful Catholics know what our Protestant friends mean when the ask about the former, but think of our relationship as the later -- intimate, loving, respectful -- and uniquely, adoring. Thinking of our relationship with the person of Jesus Christ as just a "personal relationship" seems somewhat common and distant.
Simply Catholic has a good piece by Karen Edmisten on this point:

I read an article today about Leo Tolstoy and how he suggested when you’re having a crisis in faith to continue going through the motions in order to better facilitate the return of your faith.
This wasn’t my usual sort of article but I’m glad to have read it anyway
